Well known author of The Five Love Languages, Dr. Gary Chapman has written a new book that I am so pleased to review, called The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted.
Although this book is a short read of only 143 pages, (including resources in the back of the book) it’s not a book that can be rushed through, since it is really full of practical, Biblical solutions to many marital issues. Review questions can be found at the end of each chapter for personal application and reflection. Dr. Chapman offers no quick fix for marriage, but instead offers key areas to improve upon, with strategies to help develop a deeper, happier relationship.
Dr. Chapman doesn’t sugar coat anything in this book. He is plain right from the beginning that any relationship is going to take work, and the work begins with us, not our spouses. The key is doing our best to communicate, and to show love to our spouse continually, whether we are feeling love or not. How do we do this? This kind of love can only be achieved with our trust in the Lord, and the help of the Holy Spirit.
I would recommend this book to any married couple. I don’t think you necessarily have to be going through a trying time with your spouse to appreciate Dr. Chapman’s wisdom and advice. All couples can benefit from better communication, a stronger connection, and guidance from the Holy Spirit. Although individuals could learn much from reading through this book alone, I think using it as a couples study would be most beneficial.
